Dean's working life started at 16 years of age when he began working as a professional lifeguard during school and university holidays (12 seasons in total). While studying to be a teacher, he worked as a sports coach at local schools.

Dean graduated in 2000 with a bachelors degree in Education from Rhodes University, before teaching at Stirling Primary in East London South Africa for a year.

He travelled to the UK and worked as a supply teacher in London. Upon his return to South Africa, he took up a teaching post at Hudson Park Primary School from 2004-2006. It was during this time that he began to pilot a community based business plan which would draw on his unique blend of skills as educator, facilitator, surf instructor, lifeguard, adventure guide and wannabe entrepreneur... and "Jonginenge Eco Adventure" was born.

Jonginenge looked to fill a niche by providing an eco-adventure and environment appreciation service to schools, corporate clients, the local community, tourists and tour groups to the eastern Cape.
