In 2015 Mel paddled boarded the length of the River Thames with a friend. It was an adventure with purpose, allowing them to explore their own backyard whilst contributing data to a citizen science project on water quality. It was also the catalyst for organising the first Source to Sea Thames River Relay in 2016. The purpose
of which was to engage people recreationally in using the Thames as well as to raise awareness of plastic pollution and the health of the river. The following year Mel went further abroad, paddled and explored the Thor Heyerdahl Climate Park and learnt about the valuable role of mangroves in ocean ecology and climate change.
Mel believes exploration, adventure and travel enables us to raise awareness, engage in conversation and understand the environmental issues that impact our rivers and oceans first- hand.
