Plastic Free Jersey Design Sprint

Inspiration, Ideation & Implementation

Since launching in May of this year, the Plastic Free Jersey team have been working hard to meet the objectives set by Surfers Against Sewage to certify as a Plastic Free Community. On the 6th December 2018, Hugo Tagholm, CEO of Surfers Against Sewage awarded us with our certification. We celebrated with three unique events at the Radisson.

During the day we hosted a Design Sprint for 30 GCSE & A-Level students. Inspired by the sprint process at Google and the framework of Design Thinking from IDEO, they tackled 3 challenges that Jersey is currently facing in regards to the plastic pollution problem.

Mentors from local businesses as well as facilitators from the Plastic Free Jersey team were on hand to guide the group through the Design Thinking process of inspiration, ideation & implementation to come up with innovative solutions for the challenges.

The teams were judged by a panel, with representatives from Jersey Business, Digital Jersey, Visit Jersey, Ports of Jersey, SOJ Natural Environment department, Butterfield Bank and PWC as well as Hugo Tagholm from Surfers Against Sewage.

Students on the winning teams won work experience in their chosen field. Two students were also be picked from the group to represent Jersey at the Plastic Hackathon in London in February, at the Dyson School of Design Engineering, Imperial College.

The Design Sprint was supported by Butterfield, who focus their corporate giving efforts on the protection of the marine environment.
